I was debating on whether to do this post or not, but when I got a request to do one I knew the answer was staring me right in the face. So, here it is…
Why Quinoa / The answer is simple. First, quinoa is an excellent source of protein. It contains nine amino acids that are essential to the body, so not only does it qualify as a lean protein, but it also will keep you full longer. Second, it contains amazing levels of magnesium which will relax your blood vessels and muscles. Third, it contains lots of fiber which will steady the release of the sugar into your blood stream. It won’t strike your blood sugar levels and it will also keep you fuller longer. Lastly, it is high in essential antioxidants which can reduce the risks of diseases. Ouinoa also tastes great, a lot better than oatmeal for that matter. It is nuttier and the texture is less…mushy. Here is how to make it a sweet healthy treat for breakfast.
Step 1: place 1/2 cup of cooked quinoa in a microwave safe bowl.
Step 2: add a teaspoon of a sweetener of your choice. ideas:
- agave nectar
- maple syrup
Step 3: add 1/4 cup of milk of your choice. this is an optional step, but I like doing this because it makes it a bit more filling and makes it more like cereal. ideas:
- coconut milk
- unsweetened almond milk
- regular milk
Step 4: microwave the whole mixture for about 40 sec. until it is warm.
Step 5: add your mix ins. this is the fun part and this is where your breakfast really comes together! ideas:
- 1 teaspoon of nut butter (peanut butter, almond butter, chocolate hazelnut butter, etc.)
- 1 peach
- 1 softened apple
- 1 banana
- 1/2 cup fresh berries
- 1 tablespoon greek yogurt
This is just the beginning! Quinoa is such a basic food and acts as the perfect canvas for whatever you want. If you would like combination ideas, just leave a comment asking for them. Enjoy, and get quinoa-making!
